Behind the Scenes with the Newhouse PR Department

Being a part of the Newhouse PR account this semester felt full circle to execute the skills of the department! The Newhouse PR department is recognized for its excellence in equipping students to become public relations practitioners with passionate and practicing faculty. Through the support of Anthony D’Angelo, the interim department chair and director of Newhouse executive education programs, along with Iva Vasilev, the academic coordinator of the PR department, our account was always kept in the Newhouse loop.


My team brainstormed social media content, created digital graphics, wrote captions and filmed/edited videos for X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and the newly created TikTok account. We posted professor, course and organization spotlights, recaps of professional trips and highlighted events and awards. In addition, we connected with students at Newhouse and abroad to share their experiences in class, at internships or on trips as Instagram story takeovers! On TikTok, we interviewed students about their PR perceptions of daily life and created educational content. 


This semester our team consisted of Account Supervisor Grace DeBoer, Account Associates Ben Martin and Elizabeth Riehl, Freshman Intern Elle Koff and myself as Account Executive. With a new focus on recognizing graduate students in public relations and building the foundation of the department’s TikTok, we hoped to expand the department’s audience. Some exciting statistics include the department’s Instagram account gaining over 100 new followers since the start of the spring semester. Furthermore, our Instagram reels have interacted with thousands of people, including one video attracting over 2,500 accounts!


One of our team’s favorite experiences from this semester was the in-person event we coordinated titled “PR and Popsicles”. Our account organized a table in Food.com on a warm day with popsicles in exchange for students to follow our TikTok account. Newhouse swag such as a backpack, thermos mug and phone stands further incentivized students. By the end of the day, our TikTok platform amassed over 60 followers! The PR department allowed our team to intertwine our creativity and strategy to become stronger PR practitioners.
