Hill Communications was able to continue its work with the Newhouse Magazine, News and Digital Journalism department with its social media platforms. The Newhouse MND social media accounts are utilized by current students and faculty to keep up with everything happening in the MND department. The social media accounts are also used by prospective students to learn more about Newhouse’s Magazine, News and Digital Journalism program. Our team worked closely with MND Professor Jon Glass to keep the MND social media up to date with the latest information for all things Newhouse MND.

This semester’s team included Account Supervisor Jamie Marderstein, Account Associates Chyler Rosenberg and Lindsey Hillebrecht, our Freshman Intern, Brooke Rosen and myself as Account Executive. Our team created social media content, such as graphics, captions and videos, for Instagram, LinkedIn, X and TikTok. We posted organization and event spotlights as well as highlighting award winners. To further student engagement, we coordinated several student takeovers to show what a day in the life of a Newhouse MND student looks like, both on and off campus. In addition to spotlighting events, we posted event recap posts and videos on both our TikTok and Instagram accounts. On Instagram, we gained 63 followers since the start of the semester, with our highest-performing Instagram post reaching 2,581 views and 67 likes.

This semester, we particularly wanted to continue to grow the TikTok account and the types of content posted on there. We created event recap videos as well as started a new mini-mic series where we walked around Newhouse and asked students questions in a mini-Q&A format. One of these videos was on news engagement day and it was the highest performing video on our TikTok, garnering over 2,000 views.

One of our team’s biggest jobs this semester was promoting and creating content from the Mobile Me & You Conference, an annual conference on journalism and technology that was hosted at Newhouse this year. Our account utilized daily Instagram stories featuring the Mobile Me & You speakers to help promote the conference. We also posted similar content on X. After the conference, we edited together clips from a few of the speakers on what they hoped students took away from their talk.

Working on this account has given me the chance to grow in my proficiency of Canva and Adobe Premiere Pro, as these were the primary tools used in content creation. Further, it has allowed me to gain hands-on experience in adapting social media trends, such as TikTok mini-mic interviews, to fit the professionality of a college department’s social media account. I am grateful for my time working with Newhouse MND and am excited to see the accounts continue to grow from here!
